The Mobile Phone Killer App has arrived.

I am a self confessed nerd and techno geek, and as such since 1995 have had a mobile phone, and for my sins upgraded every year since. My first mobile was a Nokia 101 a wonderful piece of kit the size of a small continent and feature packed with such gems as Ring and Dial .

Ring and Dial are just two of the features you can find today on your more modern mobile. A year or so later I replaced my Nokia 101 with what was then referred to as the Nokia Orange ( basically a branded Nokia 5.1 ). This new phone contained blissfully extravagant features such as:

  1. More than one ring tone ( one of which was the Nokia tune, joy of joys! )

  2. It had an answer phone device like an answer phone you have at home

  3. It could send messages in the form of text to another mobile
    a. By another read Darren he had one too , though the phone he had before that was a Motorola Mitac thingy he bought specifically so he could make the star trek communicator noise when flipping it open. Naturally this broke fairly swiftly, whoops I'm digressing!
    b. It's also worth noting Text messaging cost £5 per month back then and you could send as many as you liked.

  4. It had the features Dial & Ring but now they functioned in a digital way. a. This was good because when you in a bad reception area, they cut out without warning, instead of analogue which had a hissing that would warn you were losing signal

I recently found myself struggling to use my Qtek9100 (which has been flashed with the latest firmware, runs tom tom and syncs my work email calendar and contacts). In a fit of techno nostalgia I put my sim in a Nokia 6310i I had kicking about, and too my shock I found the following:

  1. I had the important ring & dial features

  2. It had a battery life measured in weeks not minutes.

  3. It took about 3 seconds to boot

Now am I getting old and cynical?
Do I need to take 3mega pixel pictures on my phone?
I have a camera for that!
Do I need to have musical rings tones that you can't hear ring?
A phone with a piezo ringer can be heard from the moon.

Is it me or are these mobile phone companies generating loads of reasons for you to buy these newer phones with their whizzy features, all of which have no use. Who wants to have a video call when we'd much rather Text someone to avoid talking to them all together?

It Seems the Mobile Killer App is Text Messaging and we had that a Decade ago. Come stop inventing microwave enabled tele picture ring tones, Where the #*#* is my hover car Tomorrow World promised me?

  1. Hi, just got the N95 8GB and I want to use my copy of tomtom on it. Currently it’s on sd card for my XDA exec. Anyone know how to get it installed and working for my N95? I've read that it won't work with the built in gps but i do have the bluetooth jobbie I used on the XDA.
